I'm Lauren and this is a blog dedicated to living life with a healthy balance. I love to run, strength train, bike and just be downright active. I'm a marathoner as of April 24, 2010 and am currently looking forward to qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

I absolutely love to eat and enjoy great food but doing it all in moderation. You'll see healthy, organic foods on here frequently but you'll also run into things such as pizza and sweets. I believe you can have it all... just not all at once.

I'm always learning and discovering new foods, recipes, workouts and ways to live a healthy lifestyle. Join me on my journey towards becoming my healthiest self.

Early Morning Run

After I blogged last night, I received a phone call from one of my closest friends in Louisville asking if I wanted to go for a run this morning.  I jumped on the idea because since we went running together two days before the marathon, I was hooked with having someone to run with.

I love that Mandy runs in the morning because it starts my day off perfectly and frees me up for the rest of the day to do whatever I want or need to do.  We pounded out 2.7 miles in just under 27 minutes.  After drinking some water and stretching (chit chatting the whole time of course) we headed to the grocery to pick up some things we needed.

After a quick grocery trip, it was back home and time to eat some breakfast.  I was hungry!

I thought about trying my hand at oatmeal again this morning but changed my mind because I didn’t want to put so much effort into it and it not be that good because I needed instant gratification.  So I made waffles instead!

Topped with half a nanner and some fresh strawberries with a drizzle of honey.

A Morningstar “sausage” pattie on the side made this meal complete!

I had thought about going on a picnic down by the river today but a cold front moved in last night and it’s a cool 50 degrees here.  Besides, there is some cleaning to do around here and I have to get ready for a fabulous dinner we are having with friends tonight over at Mandy’s house.  I’m really excited for the spread that we are going to have.  Can’t wait to take lots of fun pictures!  I’ll see you all later!

What’s your favorite waffle brand?  What are you favorite toppings?

Back on Schedule

I planned on blogging when I got home last night from Thunder Over Louisville but it was almost midnight by the time we got home, showered and settled in so I decided it was best to get some rest and blog this morning!  So good morning world!

Last night we had a great time with friends.  We met at a friends house for dessert and that’s all I ended up eating the rest of the day.  I fell asleep for an hour nap yesterday and decided to run today instead of yesterday so I enjoyed getting much needed rest.  When I woke up and started to get ready to bike over to our friends house, I didn’t feel hungry so I wasn’t going to eat just to eat.

We biked over to our friends, talked for a little while then dug into dessert.  Glenna made a strawberry shortbread pizza that was super tasty.  The hubs and I split a piece.  I had about 1/4 of the piece we split and then a little while later went back and had another 1/2 piece.

We brought our cake balls for everyone and I didn’t eat any but they sure were a hit among the crowd!

Mark made these orange cookies and they were so cake like and moist that I had two of them.  Super yum!

Then Dinah showed up with oatmeal cookies.  I ate two of these delicious cookies.  I figured I could eat two because the oatmeal was a little healthier than the sugar in all the other dishes.  🙂

We all walked down to the river to watch the fireworks and boy was it (a) crowded (b) super chilly and (c) windy as heck!

Can you tell we’re cold?

We ended up squeezing our way into the front of the pack right at the riverfront and watching from there.  This is possibly probably our last year to live in Louisville so we figured we needed to see the world’s biggest fireworks display in person at least once!  They went off 15 minutes late!  Errr… I was so cold that I was dying for them to start.  But once they started the time passed quickly.  Twenty eight minutes of these.

We ended up walking over 5 miles last night to and from the river so we definitely got a workout in!  But then the hubs and I had to bike home in the crazy traffic… at least we got home safe and sound.  It was chaos out there!

After falling asleep at 1 a.m. (Crazy!!!) I was up, bright eyed and bushy tailed at 7:30 this morning!  Back to my normal schedule.  After a few minutes of lying in bed, watching Tivo shows, and chatting with the hubs, I decided it was time for some breakfast.

We bought more whole wheat waffles at Fresh Market the other night and strawberries at Kroger yesterday… perfect combo for breakfast!!

With a drizzle of Pure Honey that we bought at the Farmer’s Market yesterday.

It’s bright and sunshine-y here in Louisville today!  I haven’t figured out when I’m going to go on my 7 mile run yet.  My right hip started bothering me last night while we were walking.  It just feels like there is a muscle that pulls every time I take a stride.  It started feeling like that off and on after my 21 mile training run 3 weeks ago.  I’m trying to listen to my body and not push it too much since I’ll be running 26.2 miles on Saturday.  I’m off to enjoy the day and whatever it may bring!

What’s your advice on this muscle pull in my right hip??

Enjoying the Day

Good morning bloggies and friends!  I hope you all are having a wonderful Sunday!  I am currently soaking in being able to relax, veg and rest my body today.  I love Sunday rest days!

Last night I did end up eating me an apple with 3/4 tablespoon of peanut butter and it was perfect snack before hitting the hay.

I actually didn’t sleep as soundly as I thought I would have last night because our next door neighbors in our loft decided to party all night.  Not cool.  It screwed both the hubs and I up for much deserved sleep.  So we ended up napping on and off all morning until around 9 o’clock or so.

I have to admit, I’ve stuck to my promise of resting my body so I’ve lounged in bed and caught up on some Tivo shows.  I love mornings/days like today!  It’s yucky and rainy outside which equals an overcast day perfect to curl up and do nothing!

I figured I would do more of a brunch today and then eat dinner tonight after church.  I decided to finish up my last two whole wheat waffles in the freezer.

A great choice, I must say!  I usually have just one waffle but since I’m still catching up on my calories that I burnt yesterday on my 21 miler, I decided my body needed two!

Topped with some strawberries and sliced banana. And a drizzle of maple syrup.

Some fruit on the side, of course.

All together.  Doesn’t it look gorgeous!?  I love making my food look great because it makes the eating experience that much more enjoyable!

I’ve already downed a lot of water this morning.  I’m still so thirsty even though I drank like a camel yesterday before, during and after my run.  I guess my body is trying to tell me something!  Ok, let me talk about this… I drink so much water everyday that I am up in the middle of the night 2 or 3 times to the bathroom!  I haven’t slept through the night since I started marathon training. I know it’s a good thing that I’m drinking water like a fish but I hate getting up in the middle of the night so much!  I really can’t say it’s a true complaint because I know my body needs it so I’ll keep toughing it out.  I just thought I’d rant about it for a minute.  🙂

I know this was super quick but I’m off to do… oh wait, nothing!  Hehe.  I love it!  I’ll be seeing you all later tonight after church and dinner!

What’s your favorite thing for breakfast when you have a day off?

One Hour Later

Well hello all!  Welcome to Daylight Savings Time!  I am so excited about it staying lighter at night time!  Spring, summer and fall the hubs and I take major advantage of the increased daytime and love to go on evening walks all around Old Louisville.  It’s our thing and I’m ecstatic about it getting warmer and lighter so we can start our routine up again.

I only slept until 9:30 despite the time change so really that’s 8:30 according to my body.  The hubs is now home which I’m ever so grateful that he’s back safe and sound.  He even rented the movie “Precious” for me to watch last night when he got home.  We ended up finishing it this morning because we were so dog tired last night.  It was a good movie but extremely sad and heart breaking.  But a must see for sure.

I decided after we finished up the rest of the movie that I needed some food in my belly.  Someone say waffles with fruit?  Yes, please.

Some banana and grapes on the side.

With some banana and a drizzle of maple syrup topped on my whole wheat waffle as well.

All together.

A delicious breakfast if I do say so.

We’re headed to a friends house for a birthday celebration for her husband in just a couple of hours where there will be pizza.  I hate that I’m going to be eating pizza again but I’m going to try and keep it light with just a couple of pieces.

It doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to finish up those remaining 4.5 miles today since it’s rainy and yucky outside.  But my body is extremely stiff and sore from yesterday’s run so it’s probably best.  Hopefully Monday night will be clear enough to hit the pavement.

Well, I’m off to get ready to head to the party in a little bit.  Hope you all are having a great first day of Daylight Savings Time!  See you this afternoon!
