    I'm Lauren and this is a blog dedicated to living life with a healthy balance. I love to run, strength train, bike and just be downright active. I'm a marathoner as of April 24, 2010 and am currently looking forward to qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

    I absolutely love to eat and enjoy great food but doing it all in moderation. You'll see healthy, organic foods on here frequently but you'll also run into things such as pizza and sweets. I believe you can have it all... just not all at once.

Fitting It In

Good afternoon friends! I decided to iPhone my post today since I haven’t had a middle of the day posting lately! So here you go!

I got in some good leg and ab strength training last night. I was feeling the burn for sure! I feel like that’s always a good sign for a strong workout. I could definitely feel my heart rate go up during my many lunges, that’s for sure.

I was excited to be ready for sleep by 10:15 last night! Getting closer to my 10 p.m. goal! And I slept super hard last night which is always nice.

I walked out this morning to be pleasantly surprised with 60 degree temperatures! I’m thinking I need to get my bike tuned up ASAP so I can start biking to and from work again. Can’t wait to get my blood pumping with a little biking in the mornings again!

I couldn’t wait for breakfast this morning because it’s my favorite cereal combo. Kashi H2H and Special K Granola! Love love love it. And it usually keeps me totally satisfied until lunch time. That’s a huge plus!

I was going to have pizza leftover from last night for lunch but a medical rep brought us Jimmy John’s so I’ll save pizza for tomorrow.

One veggie and one ham.

A bag of their BBQ chips. Only 130 calories. Not bad at all.

All together. I’m all about a free great lunch!!

I’m off and running to finish up the rest of my 12 hour shift. It’s another fruit dinner since community group is tonight. See you later!!


Movie Night

Today turned out to be completely different than I expected. Well, first of all, I ended up being ready for sleep at 10:15 last night so I’m getting closer to my 10 p.m. goal. Slowly but surely.

I really did feel more rested today, even with just a few minutes of extra sleep.

I got pulled to a completely different unit at work today and it was actually a nice change of pace.

I ended up eating a banana for breakfast instead of my usual cereal. A nice change of routine.

Lunch couldn’t have come quick enough. I was so hungry by 11 a.m.! But I was able to hold off until noon because one of our anesthesiologist had lunch delivered from a Medittaranian restaurant, Shiraz, in town. Ridiculously insane good.

My pita had a spread of hummus, chipotle sauce, loaded with roasted tomatoes, onion, zucchini, squash and two small pieces of chicken.

I also had a piece of mahi on a bed of lettuce and veggie salad that consisted of onion, cucumber, tomatoes and herbs.

All together.

I went back for unpictured seconds of the veggie salad and a couple slices of the roasted tomatoes topped with a little hummus and chipotle sauce.

That surely filled me up for the rest of the day so I didn’t eat again until “dinner”.

One of our friends received several free sneak peek movie tickets to see “The Bounty Hunter” featuring Gerard Butler and Jennifer Anniston.

I ate my “dinner” at the movie theater.

The hubs brought me a sliced apple, banana and grapes.

I ate it with 1.5 tbsps. of peanut butter.

And halfway through the movie I ate my trail mix I brought along. Dry roasted almonds, craisins and dark chocolate covered pieces of plum.

The movie was cute.  A definite renter for sure!  I don’t know if I’d  spend >$20 to see it in the theaters but I would definitely rent to watch at home.  I just love both of them!!

Well I’m finally home and it’s definitely past my bedtime of 10 p.m. but hopefully I’ll fall asleep in no time. My mood has been off kilter lately so I’m trying to figure out why. Hrmph. I don’t like feeling this way. Maybe tomorrow I’ll feel back to my normal self.

Listening to My Body

So I headed back out after I posted earlier to finish up my 19 miler.  I am ashamed to say that I only made it to 14.5 miles.  My body started to completely shut down on me.  It was aching and burning everywhere and as much as my heart wanted to keep going that last 4.5 miles, I knew I needed to stop before I injured myself.

Now I’m battling the guilt in my heart from stopping but my intellect tells me I did the right thing.  Throughout reading “Run Less Run Faster” I have read many times that you need to listen to your body.  I listened and now am trying to deal with accepting that I did not complete my whole 19 mile run but that I did just run 14.5 miles and that is great in and of itself!  Just three short years ago, I couldn’t even run more than two minutes straight so now that I’m running these crazy, long distances, I have to be proud of myself.  I know runners have good running days and not so good running days but I just want marathon day to be a good running day for me!  I think it will be because of all the people and energy buzzing around… and of course, adrenaline helps out a ton!

But all in all, I finished up my run strong at 2:40:04.  I was completely on track to finish the whole 19 miles in less than 3:30:00 so I’m proud.  I ran 17 miles in 3:37:00 last week so I’m definitely improving my time slowly but surely.

Also, I failed to eat breakfast this morning.  I know, I know, that’s probably so horrible of me but I won’t make that mistake again.  I am sort of terrified of eating before long runs because of the possibility of side splints.

And I think I need to conquer the hill training on my shorter run days so I don’t wear myself out on my long runs.

So anyway… I think I did great with the distance I did run.  I ran all my miles within 10:30-11:15 minute/miles and that is super improved from last week when all my miles were between 12-13 minute/mile.

I would LOVE to finish the remaining 4.5 miles tonight or tomorrow but I’m going to wait and see how my body feels.  Tomorrow seems more reasonable than tonight so I’m keeping my fingers crossed to wake up with a bolt of energy tomorrow and go run my heart out and redeem myself.  😉

So, I came inside to dig into some food since I hadn’t eaten all day.

I figured a ham sandwich on whole wheat would be a great post-recovery run meal.

Two pieces whole wheat toast, provolone cheese, fresh shaved ham, spring mix, tomato, onion, and a light spread of mayo.  (I love mayo and refuse to take it out of my kitchen.  Moderation is key.)

I added a mandarin for my side instead of chips.  I love these little things!  Can’t you tell since I eat them pretty much daily?!

I’m now going to recover by soaking in a hot bubble bath while reading some more of Bethenny Frankel’s book, “The Skinnygirl Dish” and maybe watch a little bit of the tube for a wind down.

Do you ever have not so good running/workout days and if so, what do you do to battle your heart from feeling so discouraged?

A Little of This and A Little of That

That’s exactly what my lunch consisted of today.  I didn’t really have any set lunch planned out so I just threw together a mixture.

Roasted red pepper hummus with wheat crackers, manadarin, red grapes and dry roasted almonds.

I’m glad I kept it pretty light because I’ll have such a starchy, carb loaded dinner tonight with the girls.

This morning I spent pretty much in my office bed reading blogs and catching up on the good ole Tivo.  I finally decided that it was time to get out of bed and get some things accomplished in case I got called in.  I haven’t gotten called in yet, obviously, so here’s to hoping that I have the rest of the afternoon off.

Anyway… I ended up working my booty out with some leg strength training, mixed with a tiny bit of arm strength training and some major ab work.  My abs and legs were burning.  I love feeling that burn!!  As I was on the ground, close to the ground, squatting in one spot, I noticed some things that needed to be cleaned.

So I hopped to it and burned up some more calories lifting furniture, vacuuming, loading the dishwasher, wiping things down and folding and putting away laundry.  I haven’t tackled the bathroom yet so maybe I’ll do that tomorrow.  That’s my least favorite spot in the loft to clean.

I count my day as having been productive!  It’s yucky, overcast and rainy outside and I’m fervently praying that the rain will stop by tomorrow so I can get my 19 miler in!! Eek!

Alright, the hubs is leaving soon for his overnight trip and taking the computer with him so hopefully the lighting will be good enough at the restaurant tonight to take a few pictures of the food with my iPhone so I can post later tonight or tomorrow.  If not then I’ll just shoot away with my camera and wait until he gets home tomorrow night to post.  We’ll see.  Keep checking in.  I might surprise you guys with a post!  😉

Long Day…

Today just seemed to drag on.  Does anyone else feel that way about today in particular?   I don’t know what it was but it seemed like tonight would never get here.  But it’s here and I’m thankful now.

I was the c-section queen at work today so I ran around the operating room like a busy little bee.

I finally got to eat some breakfast around 10 a.m.

Wheat puffed cereal and Special K Granola mixture.  Not too bad but the wheat puffed cereal is like dry, un-sweet sugar smacks.

Not but a couple of hours later, I stole the chance to eat lunch before I missed out.

A big green salad just like yesterday.

I got so busy with more c-sections so I ended up not eating my pear that I had brought and ended up eating a fruit/granola dinner at community group instead.  The hubs brought me a sliced red apple and banana.  I paired it with 1.5 tablespoons of peanut butter.

I had brought a homemade peanut butter granola (crumbles bar) bar with me but didn’t take a picture since we had already started our discussion.  But it sure was tasty.  I can’t wait to keep experimenting with perfecting my own homemade granola bar recipe!!

I’m hope and headed to shower and then bed.  I’m scheduled to work tomorrow but I have a funny feeling that I’ll be put on call.  I don’t really care either way what happens.  I’d rather work because the hubs is leaving town until Saturday evening so I don’t prefer to chill out by myself.  But at least I have a dinner with a lot of people from work planned for tomorrow night at an Italian grill that I’ve never been to before.  It’ll be great carbo loading for my 19 mile run on Saturday!!!

Alright friends, I’m off to let the sandman do its thing!  Hope you all had a fantastic Thursday!  Get ready!  The weekend is almost here!!

Called In…

Of course having to be on call would turn out to be that I would be called in.  Within 30 minutes of me posting about breakfast, I was called into work.  I hadn’t yet started to eat my lunch so I grabbed it and took it with me and ended up eating it at 3 p.m. instead.  Oh well.  At least I got to eat.

A big salad topped with the usual and I added some grilled chicken this time.  Yum!!! I loved this salad today!  I had some more chicken and asparagus left over from last night so I ate the rest of that as a side.

Even though I ate lunch super late, I decided I need my mandarin I packed as a snack around 6 p.m. because we had another commitment at church for me to run to right after work.

I figured that might hold me over until almost 9 p.m. when we would be able to get home and eat dinner.

I was starving by the time I got home so I quickly hurried around the kitchen and helped the hubs get all the ingredients ready for our panini’s!!!

A yummy ham and cheese panini for me with the hubs special sauce.  Mmm… mmm… good.

A little hummus and crackers on the side?  Yes please!

And some grapes for afterwards.

It’s been a good day all in all… now I’m ready to get into bed and get some sleep so I can wake up and head to work tomorrow.  Tomorrow is another long day with a 12 hour shift and then Community Group afterwards.  Hope you all had a great hump day!  See you tomorrow!

Catching Up

It seems like I haven’t posted in forever and it was only yesterday afternoon!  I feel like I have so much to catch you all up on!  So get ready for a little bit of a lengthy post.  😉

Plans changed for girls night last night.  Dinner ended up being canceled and I ended up staying at work until after 7 p.m. because we got busy.  They ended up still going to the movie but by the time I got out of work, swung by some semi-healthy fast food place to pick up a bite on the way, I would’ve definitely not gotten there in time so I decided to not stress about it and the hubs and I grabbed a quick sushi dinner instead.

We ended up at Osaka for my first true taste of sushi.  I let the hubs take the reins and order for me.  He ended up ordering three rolls to split between the two of us with 8 pieces to each roll.

My favorite would definitely have to be the dynamite roll.  Surprise surprise that it’s the spiciest and we almost didn’t order it!

I ended up inhaling 4 pieces of each kind because they were pretty small but ended up feeling super bloated and full later on.

I was still hungry after the 12 pieces (12 pieces!!!  Is that a lot of sushi for one person?!) so I ordered a small house salad with ginger dressing.  The hubs ate half.

Gyoza (Pork dumplings) was ordered by the hubs and I ate two.

P.S. Thank you all for your suggestions for sushi!!!  I see sushi as future meals in the future.  Probably not a weekly thing because of all the sodium but definitely an every once in a while treat!

So like I said before, by the time I got home, I was super full and decided that when I was packing my lunch that I would try to eat super clean today.  And I feel like I suceeded.

Breakfast: Special K low fat granola and Kashi Honey Toasted H2H.  My new favorite cereal combo!!

The combo really filled me up and lasted me several hours.

Lunch: Organic baby spring mix topped with shredded carrots, alfalfa sprouts, tomatoes, feta cheese and balsamic vinaigrette.

And obviously 4 whole wheat crackers.

It was definitely pretty filling.

Since we were running around busy today, I was definitely hungry by 4 p.m. for the snack I packed.

Diced whole apple, grapes and sliced banana.  I thought I would maybe eat only half but ended up eating the whole thing which really was a lot but I was hangry!!

I couldn’t wait to leave work to go running in the great weather we had today.  We are supposed to get rain the rest of the week so I’m glad I fit in a 3 miler tonight.  And in 63 degree weather, I wasn’t going to complain.

I ended up really pushing myself tonight.  I did sprints the last 1.5 miles and ended up running 3 miles in 27:00 minutes!  Woo hoo!!  Take that pavement!  I burned it up!

I quickly headed inside to eat some dinner that was waiting on me!  Grilled chicken, asparagus and sauteed mushrooms topped with a drizzle of cheese.

The piece of chicken was HUGE!

So I ate half of the chicken and half the asparagus to put it on my salad for tomorrow’s lunch.  Grilled chicken salad?  Yes, please!

Whew… I guess that’s about it for now.  Now time for a much needed shower and wind down.  Climbing in bed to watch The Biggest Loser!  Love Tuesday nights!!
