    I'm Lauren and this is a blog dedicated to living life with a healthy balance. I love to run, strength train, bike and just be downright active. I'm a marathoner as of April 24, 2010 and am currently looking forward to qualifying for the Boston Marathon.

    I absolutely love to eat and enjoy great food but doing it all in moderation. You'll see healthy, organic foods on here frequently but you'll also run into things such as pizza and sweets. I believe you can have it all... just not all at once.

    I'm always learning and discovering new foods, recipes, workouts and ways to live a healthy lifestyle. Join me on my journey towards becoming my healthiest self.

Party Number 2- Done

We are back from the wedding and reception and are pooped. It’s been a busy day and I am happy that I’m about to climb into bed.

The wedding was great. It always brings tears to my eyes to watch people step into holy matrimony. I find myself thinking back to our wedding day and it was so perfect that I can’t imagine what we could do differently to make it any more special.

After we got in the car after the wedding, I wanted to take a picture of our rings.  This is one shot we forgot to get on our wedding day!  Boo!

Which, by the way, isn’t the hubs original wedding ring.  He lost 20 pounds after we got married and his other titanium ring was way too big!  So we bought this new titanium ring when we were in Vegas on a vacation a year and a half ago.  And I have to say, I like it better than the original.  Another fun fact: My engagement ring is actually the hubs grandmother’s wedding ring.  We had my two bands custom made to match.  Makes it that much more special to me.

We headed to the reception and sat down with some finger food appetizers first.

Then the wedding party arrived and it was time to eat.  I was sure to get a lot of green on my plate since my plate from the graduation party was lacking in the green.

Salad, green beans, potatoes, cheese tortellini, chicken cordon bleu, and beef tenderloin.  Oops, can’t forget the roll.

I waited around just to grab some cake.  Such a pretty presentation.

The pictures I took of the slice of cake I grabbed weren’t good at all because of the low lighting so you’ll just have to picture a slice of strawberry cake.

We have an extremely early morning ahead of us and another jam-packed day tomorrow.  So who knows when I’ll be able to blog.  I might be iPhoning it tomorrow morning.  I’m hurrying off of here so I can wash my face and climb into bed.  A 6:30 wake up call is going to come way too fast!  Nite!

What’s your favorite part of a wedding?

I have two: Watching the dad give his daughter away ALWAYS brings tears to my eyes and when the couple is first announced as Mr. and Mrs. to walk back down the aisle to leave.  That was such a special moment for our wedding and will never forget doing a little jump and squeal as I turned around, grabbed my bouquet of flowers and my husband’s arm for them to announce our new name!  I loved every second.


Derby Fun

It’s only 8:30 at night and we’re already back from our Derby festivities.  Party animals, aren’t we?!  I’m a wild woman, let me tell you.  Bedtime at 10?  Doesn’t everyone go to bed that early?  🙂

I was sent home early from work, which I expected so I headed home, washed my hair, painted my toesies and fingers, and donned my swankiest black dress and heels (Thanks Kate Spade for always being there for me) and off we went.

They had some eats of course and I got a bit of everything.

I might have gone back for a couple more bites of ice cream and chocolate cake. 🙂

Ok, I’ve discovered I have a problem.  I am all about Bethenny Frankel’s food philosophy’s or should we say food rules in her book, “Naturally Thin” but I’m thinking I need to read this book everyday to feel in control over my food choices.  Alright, here’s the nitty gritty.  This past week I have indulged in anything and everything I want.  I have not shown all the little sweets I have popped into my mouth every evening but they are there and sometimes in copious amounts.  I was doing really well on the eating in moderation thing but this week, after the marathon, I have just felt the need to overindulge and I don’t know why.  So strange.  Oh wait… now that I think about it, I know why.  It’s those dang hormones that go raging every month!  Eek!  Totally forgot about that.  Whew, I feel better now.  But still… I have really not been treating my body well at all so please forgive me for this horrible week of eats.  Tomorrow is a new day (I feel like I say this a lot) and I am vowing to myself (and you) that I will treat my body well from now on.  That doesn’t mean I won’t eat sweets ever again but I’m totally putting more crap in my body than I should.  So knowing that you all know my little secret now, I’m hoping I’ll be more accountable to myself because I know it’s out there in the open.

Ok, I feel better now just getting that off my chest.  It’s actually an early night for me so I’m going to turn in and settle down for the night.  I have to work the next 5 days so I need some rest!

Update on my feet: My toes feel better today.  Not completely 100% but much better!  I’m hoping by tomorrow night or Monday night, I’ll be running again.  Oh Lord please!  I need to run for my sanity!!

Have you had any food revelations lately?


What am I itching for you might ask? A nice, long run! Crazy, huh? Monday nights are usually my nights to run after work so it was really weird not to throw on my running shoes and pound the pavement.

At least I had a nice bike ride on the way home from work. That makes me feel like I’m getting a little activity in each day.

Oh yes, I did have an afternoon snack I almost forgot about!

Is it a sad snack?

Nope, I think it’s happy!

I came home to a husband slaving over books and his computer because he has a 15 page paper due tomorrow.

So to have a quick and easy meal for him to get back to writing, I made sloppy joe’s of course! Duh!  We were going to have the dinner we planned to eat last night but this was so easy that he could get back to writing ASAP.

I make my sloppy joe’s with ground turkey instead of ground beef and put it all on a whole wheat bun.

Chips on the side are a must have with sloppy joe’s. Don’t you think?

I’ll be sad when we finish off the cake. It’s so sinfully good!

Time for me to enjoy a night off from running and climb in bed early. Five a.m. will come oh too quickly.

My Rest Day

Here’s what my rest day has looked like:

Church, sleep, lunch, sleep, make food for work tomorrow, blog, shower, watch TV, sleep.

Oh, and wrap my toes!  I’m trying to save that second toenail but I don’t think it’s going to happen.  Both my water blisters have been opened and I’m hoping my toes feel back to normal soon.  At least my toes are painted a cute color!  The first paint of the flip flop season!

I kid you not, my day has been comprised of 90% sleep.  I woke up this morning around 8 to get ready for church.  Thank goodness I only took 1/4 of that muscle relaxer last night because I was wasted!  I just did not want to get out of bed.  But knowing the hubs was leading our church in worship this morning made me happy to get out of bed.

Yeesh… I didn’t realize how hard it would be to physically get out of bed.  My legs felt like they were 100 lbs. each!  My quads were tight and burning like no other feeling I’ve ever felt after a long run before.  I got ready and forced myself to walk down the 4 flights of stairs in our building instead of taking the elevator in hopes of stretching them out a little bit.  I looked like a doofus hobbling down the stairs.

This is me today… for sure.

After church I came home, ate an unpictured mandarin and climbed into bed where I planned to stay for the rest of the day.  I found myself waking up to the hubs calling telling me he was on his way home.  Oops… I had already fallen asleep!  He came home, we made lunch.  I couldn’t wait!  I was STARVING!

Ok, I was still starving well after I ate this so I thought cake and ice cream was in order.  Guess I’m making up for all those calories I burned yesterday.  You think?

After eating this… I ate… just kidding!  I was completely satisfied.  Not too full at all!  My belly just wanted some more sweets. I cannot deny it what it wants!  I must oblige.  🙂

The hubs and I started to watch SNL from last night and I found myself at 5:30 waking up!  Oops… another long napper!

Upon waking up, the hubs gave me a full body massage.  It hurt so good!!  I am back to work tomorrow with bending, moving around, lifting, etc. and I know I’m going to be hurting so I’m glad the hubs helped me break up some of the lactic acid that has built up in my body from yesterday.

We had planned on making a super dinner tonight but both of us are totally not hungry at all!  So I got to working in the kitchen with making my breakfast, lunch and snacks for tomorrow.  Love when I’m productive and get my act together early in the night so I can chill the rest of the time!

I’m off to shower, relax and get a whole night’s rest because it’s back to the baby factory tomorrow.  Life doesn’t stop when you’re a marathoner, apparently!  The world keeps on spinning and I keep on working.  It’s been an absolute dream of a weekend and I still haven’t woken up from it yet.  Hope yours was just as fabulous!  See you in the morning!

Needing Some Rest

Well I’m about to hit the hay and hit it hard. I’m finally feeling pretty exhausted and have taken a muscle relaxer so I can actually be half-way comfortable while sleeping tonight so it’s making my eyelids shut. My hips are sore enough to where I know I’ll wake up each time I turn sides so it was necessary.

We headed out after I blogged earlier for dinner and a meeting. I didn’t think I’d be hungry for dinner but ended up feeling a little hungry after all.

I ate some chicken Mexican soup full of chicken, beans, corn and tomatoes. Yummy comfort food.

With a little bit of ceasar salad and a piece of cornbread on the side.

Even though it wasn’t a lot of food, it was just enough to keep me full without overdoing it.

I couldn’t wait to get home for some dessert! I managed to choke down (I lied, it went down as smooth as butter) a piece of cake (no icing) and chocolate ice cream. Ah… I’m content.

Time for me to crawl into bed and get a good night’s rest. Thank you all, once again, for your kind words and congratulations. Maybe when I wake up in the morning it’ll hit me that I actually ran a marathon! So insane!! See you all tomorrow!

Loading Up

We had such a great afternoon relaxing at the loft and going to introduce my mom to people I work with.

I couldn’t wait for dinner though! Time for carbo loading. I can’t think of a better way to load up on the carbs than to eat some good ole Chicago style deep dish supreme pizza!

Old Chicago has some of the best pizza in town and it’s been ages since we’ve been there so we were due!

Started off splitting a Greek salad with mom.

I ended up eating about 1/3 and a dip of dressing.  Mom loves her dressing so she drowned her salad after I had my few bites.  She loves to live… what can I say?

Then it was time for the main event! Their Chicago Seven pizza. Deep dish style. Obvi.

It was topped with pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, black olives, bell peppers, onion and fresh mozzarella.

I had two pieces and every bite was to die for.

We headed back home to dig into some cake and ice cream!  No pictures because you saw it last night!

And then we had a surprise up our sleeve for mom’s birthday and Mother’s Day which are both right around the corner.

She has a media room at her new house and at Christmas we gave her a framed “Gone With the Wind” and “Mommie Dearest” movie posters for her to hang in her theater room.

To complete the hangings for the wall, we gave her another framed poster. This time “To Kill a Mockingbird”.She now has posters of three of her favorite movies to complete the look of her media room.

She was beyond surprised and elated.

We’re now chilling out on the couch and watching the movie, “Lovely Bones” from the Redbox.


What a great way to end the day.

I’ve put out all my racing essentials and am ready to go.

I just need to get some good rest so I can wake up bright and early to eat a pre-race breakfast and head to the start line.

I don’t know if I’ll blog before I head to the start line so I’ll say see you later! Please pray for (a) my physical endurance, (b) my mental state, (c) the weather (they’re expecting horrible thunderstorms and chances of tornados), (d) that I’ll finish strong, (e) for no injuries, and (f) that I’ll FINISH period!

Nite folks! Time to get some sleep! Can’t believe I’m running my first marathon tomorrow. Someone pinch me, I must be dreaming.

Good morning friends!  I had a glorious night’s sleep and woke up at 8:30 this morning.

After our decadent dinner and my dessert of the richest cake and ice cream, it was time to start my day off eating clean.

Here’s my cake (with the icing scraped off) and some chocolate ice cream that I devoured last night.

I decided fruit was in order this morning.  A mix of strawberries, mandarins and an apple.

I only ate about half and packed the rest away for an afternoon snack.

I feel cleaner and lighter already.  Gotta de-tox the body from all the richness we ate last night!

It is rainy and disgusting outside today!  We’re supposed to have scattered thunderstorms tomorrow during the marathon and I’m just praying that the rain will all come down today and not tomorrow.  I can’t imagine starting a 26.2 mile race in the rain but I think I’d do better if it started raining after the start.

We don’t really have any solid plans today except for taking my mom up to see where I work, meet my co-workers and eat at Old Chicago Pizza tonight to carbo load for tomorrow.
